This week, the Northeast, which includes the New York City metropolitan region, is bracing for a considerable risk of flash flooding due to an exceptionally powerful storm that may deliver as much rain as typically falls in an entire month within just a few days.
This drenching system will originate from an energy pocket that is igniting severe thunderstorms in parts of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley on Monday. The main hazard will be strong wind gusts, which have the potential to cause power outages and uproot trees, with isolated tornadoes also being a possibility. An extremely dangerous and destructive tornado touched down in northeast Wisconsin on Monday afternoon.

On Tuesday, the storm will begin moving into the Northeast, where it is expected to strengthen and significantly slow down. It is anticipated to hover over certain areas of the region until at least Thursday, resulting in excessive rainfall.
The storm’s intensity as it passes over central New York on Wednesday will resemble a system typically expected in October, November, or December, rather than late July. Summer storms are generally less powerful than those in winter because the jet stream does not contribute as much to their intensification.
Concurrently, the system will draw from enriched, moisture-laden air streams from the Atlantic and the Gulf. The water vapor content in this air mass will exceed typical levels, even for the humid summer months.
The clash of these extreme conditions will lead to a series of heavy rain events and thunderstorms across the Northeast.
In northern New Jersey on Monday, a concerning preview was witnessed even before the main storm made its way in. A slow-moving thunderstorm released more than 3 inches of rain near Glen Rock and Ridgewood, according to radar estimates, causing flooding on highways and streets across parts of Bergen and Passaic counties.
Footage from Glen Rock depicted a BMW almost completely submerged. Two individuals trapped inside managed to escape before police arrived, but the water was initially too deep for a tow truck to reach the car. Numerous water rescues were reported in Glen Rock, Hawthorne, and Fair Lawn, New Jersey.
This incident was merely a precursor to the main event. The flooding on Monday stemmed from a localized thunderstorm, preceding the larger storm forecasted to bring a more widespread risk of flooding beginning Tuesday. The ground in several areas is already saturated, making them increasingly susceptible to further flooding.
The forecast
The New York Tri-state area, stretching from northern New Jersey to western Connecticut, faces the highest risk of heavy rainfall and flooding on Tuesday and Tuesday night, while a localized threat extends to various other regions in the Northeast.
A period of rainfall is expected in the morning from eastern New York to Pennsylvania, likely followed by further bouts in the afternoon and evening. The most severe storms may produce rain at rates of up to two inches per hour.
Urban areas and those with inadequate drainage are anticipated to experience the most severe flooding issues, with some locations potentially facing significant impacts, similar to instances seen multiple times across the U.S. this month, including in New York City on July 18, as reported by the National Weather Service.
Flash flooding is among the most perilous weather threats and is especially hazardous in city environments. Years ago, nearly five years back, the Northeast experienced fatalities when Hurricane Ida unleashed 7 to 10 inches of rain across a corridor that is now under threat.
Further south, severe thunderstorms are anticipated on Tuesday from the vicinity of Washington, DC, extending to North Carolina. The primary concern from any intensifying storms will be wind damage.
On Wednesday, the broader flash flood risk will shift slightly northward into southern New England, which includes Boston and Hartford, while New York City will continue to be at risk.
Heavy rainfall is expected to persist in this region at the start of the day. Flash flooding may occur as narrow bands of intense rain move northeast throughout the afternoon. New storms could also develop behind this system.
There is a likelihood of scattered flash flooding effects, particularly in urban and poorly drained locations, the National Weather Service in Boston stated. Expect potential travel delays at airports and on roadways across the region.
Some areas in the Northeast may continue to experience heavy rainfall on Thursday, but it is too early to identify any specific flooding concerns.
The majority of the flood risk areas in the Northeast are expected to receive between 1 to 4 inches of rain by Thursday. In some localized regions, totals may reach 6 inches or more.
Greater rainfall totals are likely in areas that experience several rounds of rain or where rain bands slow down or become stationary for extended periods, which may lead to more severe flooding consequences.
The storm is predicted to weaken and move out of the Northeast by Friday, although a few isolated showers and storms may still develop across the area.
