The German Football Association revealed on Friday that Jürgen Klopp will serve as the head coach for Germany’s men’s national soccer team.
Klopp has committed to a four-year deal that will extend his leadership until the 2030 World Cup.
Assisting him will be Peter Krawietz, Pep Lijnders, and former German international Sven Bender.
This announcement follows a disappointing premature exit from the 2026 World Cup.
Germany faced a stunning defeat in the Round of 32 against the underdog Paraguay during a tense penalty shootout. Following this shocking result, Julian Nagelsmann stepped down as the national team’s coach.
Klopp, 59, expressed in a statement, “The national team has the power to unite us Germans like few other things. This is precisely what makes this role so meaningful for me.”
He further stated, “I am excited about this unique challenge in German football, which we will tackle with humility and patience: building a team that supports one another, enjoys the game, and can count on the unwavering support of our nation’s people.”
German Football Association president Bernd Neuendorf commented on Klopp’s hiring, saying, “We had very thorough discussions. From the beginning, he was our top choice.”
“Everyone at the DFB was in full agreement that he was the candidate we needed to engage with. Our discussions with Jürgen only reinforced our conviction that he is the right person at this moment.”
However, Klopp issued a caution to the press during his introductory event in Frankfurt, indicating he might resign if his private life was intruded upon by journalists.
“If you misbehave and disrupt my family’s peace, I will leave. I’ll just walk away,” he warned.
“I understand that some countries have national team coaches who face even harsher treatment, but I truly enjoy this role, yet I am always prepared to walk away if necessary.”
A new beginning
This marks Klopp’s inaugural venture into international management following a prosperous club career.
He began his head coaching journey with Mainz 05 in 2001, the same club where he played for over ten years.
In 2008, Klopp moved to Borussia Dortmund, where he led the team, known as Die Schwarzgelben, to consecutive league titles in the 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 seasons.
After spending seven years in Dortmund, Klopp moved to the northwest of England to take the position of head coach at Liverpool.
Klopp quickly earned iconic status in Merseyside following his transformative nine-year tenure at the club.
He guided Liverpool to their first league championship in three decades and three Champions League finals, triumphing in the competition in 2019.
After departing from Liverpool in 2024, Klopp took up the role of head of global soccer at Red Bull.
Changing the course
Klopp’s challenge will be to restore Germany’s place among the world’s elite soccer teams.
The men’s national team boasts four World Cup victories and three European Championship titles, but their performance has fallen short recently.
Since clinching the title at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Germany has faced significant letdowns on the international stage.
The team did not advance beyond the group stage in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, culminating in this year’s unexpected exit.
The team has also not made it to the semifinals of the European Championship in its last two attempts.
While Klopp may not have a squad as talented as those in the past, there are still reasons for optimism.
The future of the German national team is expected to focus on young stars like Jamal Musiala, Florian Wirtz, and Aleksandar Pavlović.
These players are already integral to the team and will aim to develop further under Klopp’s guidance.
With experienced players like Kai Havertz and Joshua Kimmich in the mix, Klopp is hopeful about maximizing the potential of his team.
Klopp’s first official match as head coach will take place away against the Netherlands on September 24 in the UEFA Nations League.
