Five climbers from Bosnia tragically lost their lives on Mount Elbrus, the tallest peak in Europe, as they were overtaken by a severe storm. According to RIA Novosti, Russian officials have indicated that the remains of three individuals remain on the mountain due to inclement weather conditions.

The Emergencies Ministry of Russia has reported that rescuers were able to recover the bodies of two climbers situated at an elevation of 5,350 meters (17,552 feet) after first assisting two other climbers who were subsequently brought down for medical treatment.

The Investigative Committee’s regional branch in Russia stated that three additional climbers’ bodies have been retrieved but are still on the mountain due to harsh weather conditions, as reported by RIA Novosti.

While authorities in Russia did not disclose the climbers’ nationalities, local law enforcement informed RIA Novosti that the deceased individuals hailed from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Mount Elbrus, standing at 5,642 meters (18,511 feet) just north of Georgia’s border, is notorious for its unpredictable weather and climbing conditions.

Reports from Bosnian media indicate that the seven-member climbing group was comprised of residents from Zenica, including a married couple and a female doctor employed at the local hospital.

Russian news outlets have stated that the search and recovery efforts have been hampered by unfavorable weather, including strong winds.
