Some users of Facebook and Instagram experienced significant outages on Sunday, rendering them unable to access their feeds, as reported by two internet monitoring organizations and confirmed by USdaily’s review of the platforms.
In the United States, more than 23,000 users reported issues with Facebook between 3:44 and 5:02 a.m. ET on Sunday, after which the number of complaints significantly declined, according to DownDetector, which tracks internet service performance.
During the same period, at least 18,000 users flagged problems with Instagram in the U.S., as indicated by DownDetector’s data.
NetBlocks, an organization that monitors global internet access, reported that both Facebook and Instagram users were facing international outages that were not linked to disruptions in internet service at the country level.
USdaily has reached out to Meta, the parent company of the two social media platforms, for a statement regarding the situation.
During the disruption, users of Facebook encountered an error message indicating that their account was “currently unavailable due to a site issue,” and were advised to attempt logging in again “in a few minutes.”
Meanwhile, WhatsApp, which is also owned by Meta, did not seem to face any issues during this outage.
